Lung Function Test At Our Private Clinic in Aylesbury

Each year there are an estimated 17,000 new cases of self-reported “breathing or lung problems” caused or made worse by work, according to the Labour Force Surveys over the last 3-years. A substantial proportion may be work-related asthma.

At our private clinic in Aylesbury, we offer a spirometry test to assess your lung function. This test is quick and easy, and it provides valuable information about your health. The spirometry test measures how much air you can inhale and exhale, and how quickly you can do so. This information can help to diagnose a range of respiratory problems, including asthma, COPD and pulmonary fibrosis.

A spirometry test may also be recommended if an employee has been diagnosed with a respiratory condition or if they are starting a new job which will expose them to occupational allergens. The lung function test will help monitor their symptoms, response to inhalers, medication and other required treatments.

The spirometry test is also an important tool for monitoring the progression of these diseases and assessing the effectiveness of treatment. If you have any concerns about your respiratory health, we recommend that you book a private spirometry test at our clinic.

Important to Note:

Spirometry as a stand-alone test is insufficient to make an informed respiratory diagnosis. Therefore, it is important to note that your test results are not a substitute for seeing your doctor, particularly if you are feeling unwell. You should not make a diagnosis or start any treatment without a consultation with your GP doctor or a suitably trained health care professional. There are many times when test results which are out of range are entirely insignificant but there are other times when they are not. They always need to be interpreted in the context of the rest of your health and this can only really be determined with a full clinical history and examination.

How do I prepare for the spirometry test?

Preparing for a lung function test is simple and easy. By following these instructions, you can ensure that the test will be accurate and provide useful information about your lung health.

  • Do not eat a heavy meal before the test, if instructed by your pharmacist.
  • Tell the pharmacist if you are taking any medicines or dietary supplements and continue as usual as directed or stop until the test.
  • Quit smoking for at least 6 hours before the test.
  • You should not have been drinking alcohol for 24 hours prior to the examination.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing (you will be asked to take a deep breath and exhale forcefully during the test).
  • Do not exercise vigorously for 30 minutes before the examination.
  • If you are using a short-acting inhaler that you use only when needed, do not use it 6-8 hours before the test.
  • Empty the bladder before the procedure.
