Why regular blood pressure monitoring is essential

You cannot feel high blood pressure. Most people with it feel completely well, which is why it goes undetected for years while quietly increasing the risk of stroke, heart attack and kidney damage.

One reading is rarely enough

Blood pressure moves through the day and rises for many people simply because they are in a clinic.

That is why a single high reading is not a diagnosis, and why repeated or 24 hour monitoring gives a far better answer.

What 24 hour monitoring adds

A small monitor takes readings automatically through your normal day and overnight while you sleep.

Night-time readings are particularly informative, and they are impossible to capture in a clinic appointment.

What you can change

Salt intake, alcohol, weight, activity and sleep all shift blood pressure measurably. So does stopping smoking, for overall cardiovascular risk.

Where medicine is needed, monitoring also shows whether it is working.

How often to check

Most adults should know their number at least every few years, and more often with a family history, a previous high reading or an existing diagnosis.

In short

Ask for a blood pressure check next time you are in. If readings are borderline, 24 hour monitoring settles the question.
