Preparing for a phlebotomy appointment: tips and FAQs
A blood test is a short appointment, but a little preparation makes it faster, more comfortable and more accurate.
Find out whether you need to fast
Cholesterol and glucose panels often require fasting for eight to twelve hours. Many other tests do not.
We tell you exactly what applies to your test when you book, so you are not guessing on the morning.
Drink water
Being well hydrated makes veins easier to find and the sample quicker to take. Water is fine even when fasting, unless we tell you otherwise.
Timing and medicines
Some hormone and medicine level tests depend on the time of day or when you last took a dose. Mention everything you take, including supplements.
Never stop a prescribed medicine to prepare for a test unless a clinician has told you to.
If you find needles difficult
Tell us. We can have you lie down, use a smaller gauge needle, distract you, or take extra time. Nobody is rushed.
Wear a top with sleeves that roll up easily and eat normally afterwards unless fasting continues.
In short
Ask two questions when booking: do I need to fast, and does the time of day matter. Those cover most preparation.
