Ear wax removal: benefits, safety and what to expect
Ear wax is normal and protective. It only becomes a problem when it builds up enough to block the canal, dulling hearing and causing pressure or discomfort.
Why microsuction is the preferred method
Microsuction uses gentle suction under direct vision, so your clinician can see exactly what they are doing throughout.
It is dry, controlled and generally more comfortable than syringing, which is why it is now the standard approach.
Preparing properly makes it easier
Use olive oil drops for three to five days beforehand. Softer wax comes away faster and the appointment is more comfortable.
Who needs to check first
Tell us if you have a perforated eardrum, recent ear surgery, an active infection, grommets or only one hearing ear, as we may need to refer you instead.
Please leave cotton buds alone
Buds push wax deeper and can scratch the canal or damage the eardrum. So can ear candles, which have no evidence behind them.
If your ears feel blocked, have them looked at rather than treated at home.
In short
If hearing has become muffled, an examination will quickly tell you whether wax is the cause.
